In December 2025, Lawton Chiles Middle School in Seminole County, Florida entered a Code Red lockdown after ZeroEyes gun-detection software flagged an image of a student holding a clarinet. Reporting based on police records said the alert described a person in camouflage holding a suspected rifle in a shouldered position.

ZeroEyes uses human reviewers before sending alerts, but the review did not prevent this escalation. Police searched the school and later confirmed the object was a musical instrument. A ZeroEyes executive defended the alert under a precautionary, better-safe-than-sorry rationale.

Why it matters: If an unnecessary emergency response is defined as successful operation, ordinary false-positive metrics may not capture the real cost of the system.
