THE RETAIL EQUATION · CONSUMER REPORTING
There is a consumer-reporting ecosystem for retail returns.
Return behavior → consumer report / fraud-abuse analysis → merchant decision
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lists The Retail Equation among specialty consumer-reporting companies. CFPB describes the company as monitoring and reporting retail product returns and suspected exchange fraud and abuse to merchants. Consumers can request their report and dispute inaccurate information.
Why it matters: Most people expect credit bureaus to maintain credit files. Far fewer expect an analogous reporting infrastructure to influence whether ordinary retail behavior is treated as suspicious.
