In its 2023 complaint against Ring, the FTC alleged that Ring historically gave employees and contractors unnecessarily broad access to customer video. The complaint describes one employee who allegedly used that access over several months to view thousands of video recordings belonging to at least 81 female customers.

According to the FTC, the employee specifically searched for cameras associated with intimate spaces. Ring terminated the employee after another employee discovered the conduct. The FTC alleged that Ring's access controls and monitoring were inadequate to prevent or promptly detect the abuse.

Why it matters: The camera can work perfectly and still create a privacy disaster. The relevant failure may be the person or organization entrusted with access to the resulting footage.
