Federal health-breach records include an incident involving Vitagene, a consumer health and genetics service. The exposed information included raw genotype data, partial information concerning genetic traits and health and wellness information.

Genetic information has an unusual persistence problem similar to fingerprints. It cannot be rotated after a breach, and it can reveal information not only about the individual whose sample was analyzed but potentially about biological relatives.

Why it matters: Some breached information expires. Genetic information does not. Collection creates a long-lived custody obligation because the underlying biological identifier remains tied to the person.
